If you are a Revolutionary War buff, or a Hopewell Valley history buff, or even just mildly interested in the events that took place here in Hopewell, in Trenton, and in Princeton between December 25, 1776 and January 3, 1777, you owe it to yourself to sign up for this tour - it is, simply put, SO COOL.
The tour is produced by the 10 Crucial Days organization and led by local author, historian, and Hopewell Valley Historical Society Board Member Larry Kidder. The tour starts on the Pennsylvania side of the crossing then traverses through the landing on the Jersey side, the the march to Trenton and the surprise of the Hessians, and through to the Battle of Princeton.
From the 10 Crucial Days website: "The events are discussed in the context of the local, strategically important, central Jersey towns, villages, and farms; occupied by families with diverse backgrounds; practicing varied religions such as Quakers, Presbyterians, and Anglicans, and holding complex views on loyalty to the Revolution or the King. Hear how the terrain, weaponry, and weather influenced the ways the battles were fought and how the lives of the local people were disrupted by them. See where armies marched, fought, and struggled to survive on an otherwise peaceful landscape, while the course of human history hung in the balance."
This writer has taken the tour and found that it completely shifted our perspective on how American freedom was fought for and won. It also makes you look at our home county in a completely different way - they marched through what is now Dick's Sporting Goods on Rt. 1!
