As the Hopewell Valley Historical Society's 50th anniversary approaches, we are sprucing up our website and excited to share many new initiatives. For the next couple of weeks you may run into some "under construction" labels as we fine-tune the site, but it should all be working shortly.
As you browse through this site, you will see the many different ways in which the Society strives to make Valley history accessible to the community.
Our newsletter, a staple since the very first days of the society in 1975, contains more than 1,000 pages of historical research and analysis of our ancestors and their lives.
Our house lineage committee, which also is long-standing, has produced deed searches of scores of historic homes providing a picture of the lives of the people who came before us.
The oral history program started with just a trickle in the 1970s (and those interviews - of people born in the late 19th century - are fascinating!) In the last few years, the program has exploded through the tremendous contributions of our volunteers capturing stories of the lives of our fellow Valley citizens.
The archives is a monumental achievement kept in a tiny room at the Mercer County Library-Hopewell Branch. From preserving Bicentennial quilts to cataloging many, many old photographs to answering all manner of "what was here", "who was that", "and why is that there" questions, archives keeps Hopewell history alive.
Every month, our programs committee presents at least one, and often several, programs of interest to the Hopewell Valley community. Since COVID, the committee has become expert in hybridizing the experience - live and online - to give as many people as possible access to these engaging talks. These more recent presentations are also available on youtube.
These are just a few of the ways the Hopewell Valley Historical Society works to preserve and share our heritage. As our 50th anniversary approaches in October 2025, look for more exciting opportunities to learn about history including a special anniversary book and new programming.
